Scope and Contents Folder four contains documents and letters from February 1861 as Confederate South Carolinians prepared for an attack on Fort Sumter. The folder includes a letter from General Arthur Manigault South Carolina’s Ordnance Bureau urging that supplies be sent to the forts in Charleston harbor. Scope and Contents This collection includes two letters signed by Calhoun when he was the United States' Secretary of War, which are dated September 11, 1818 and August 9, 1820; a letter dated Aug. 24, 1831 to Francis W. Pickens, and a letter dated June 20, 1834 to Col. Andrew Pickens. The first letter is to the Department of War about rations and assigning someone to record the number of rations daily used. Scope and Contents This collection contains items of Judge William McLaughlin, including letters from Henry D. Campbell and William L. Wilson. Many concern awarding of honorary degrees and elections to the Board of Trustees of Washington and Lee, of which McLaughlin was rector (1888-1898).
