Biography
The Graham Philanthropic Society was a literary and debating society founded in 1809 at Washington College (later Washington and Lee University). The name changed to Graham-Lee Society around 1871. Membership declined greatly after World War I.

Robert N. Pendleton and J. Preston Cocke, students of Washington College, wrote to Robert E. Lee on behalf of the college's Graham Philanthropic Society to inform him that he had been elected an honorary member.
