Abstract Colonel Charles Marshall, who served as an aide de camp, assistant adjutant general and military secretary to Gen. Robert E. Lee during the Civil War, wrote to Lee to respond to a request for information concerning certain campaigns during the war. The lengthy letter mostly discusses army strength, casualties, and desertions for several battles, including Petersburg, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville and Rappahannock station.
