This collection consists of papers including letters concerning Smith's retirement from both Davidson and Washington and Lee, as well as speeches, correspondence, and articles regarding Robert E. Lee, education, modern civilization, and temperance. Also includes material regarding Smith's 1921 trip to England chairing a commission to present a copy of Houdon's statue of George Washington to the British government from the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Scope and Contents This collection consists of records related to the formation and history of the Lee Memorial Association (L.M.A.). The association was formed in October 1870 immediately following the death of Robert E. Lee with the goal of creating a monument to honor him on the campus of Washington College, subsequently renamed Washington and Lee University. Scope and Contents This collection includes two letters, November 4, 1870, and January 13, 1872, to Colonel. Johnston; the letter written in 1870 is about the Army of Northern Virginia, and the letter written in 1872 concerns a donation to the Lee monument. There is a letter dated July 19, 1878 from Johnston to Preston Johnston Beale.
