College Applications, 1927-05 - 1927-09
This file contains mostly letters written by Robert Sanders concerning his son Stuart's college applications. He wrote to the presidents at the University of Florida and at Washington and Lee University, where Stuart's broter was a student. Washington and Lee granted Stuart a tentative place on their list of students, requiring he complete more credits in summer school. Upon completion of summer school at The McCallie School, Stuart was admitted officially to Washington and Lee.
Correspondence, 1929-04 - 1929-07
This file consists of correspondence between Stuart and his parents. It also consists of commencement material, where Irwin was the valedictorian. Stuart's letter to the president of the school applying for reinstatment (because of lack of credits) and the dean's response are included. Stuart was reinstated on strict probation.

Lee, education, modern civilization, and temperance. Also includes material regarding Smith's 1921 trip to England chairing a commission to present a copy of Houdon's statue of George Washington to the British government from the Commonwealth of Virginia.
J. Henry Smith Speeches
This collection consists of Washington College student J. Henry Smith's addresses to the college's "John Marshall Society" on Sept. 24, 1841; "Total Abstinence Society" on Sept. 23, 1842; a speech on "Patriotism" in celebration of George Washington's birthday as a representative of the "Rockbridge Union Volunteers" in 1842; and a speech on "Moral Education" given on Commencement Day, 1842.
