Biography

Son of Reverend George Washington Nelson and Jane Crease. He attended the University of Virginia from 1858 - 1860.Joined the Confederate Army in May 1861. Became Captain of the Hanover Light Artillery. Later he was promoted to Major and joined the staff of General William Nelson Pendleton, Chief of Artillery of the Army of Northern Virginia. He was captured in October 1863 and spent the remainder of the Civil War in multiple Union prisons. He married his first cousin Mollie Scollay of Shepherdstown, West Virginia in 1865. Ordained an Episcopal minister in 1875.He died on May 30, 1903.

Scope and Contents This collection consists of letters primarily between George Washington "Wash" Nelson, Jr., of Hanover County, Virginia and his cousin and future wife Mary “Mollie” Nelson Scollay of Shepherdstown, West Virginia. Nelson commanded the Hanover Light Artillery (Va.) and was a staff officer of General William Nelson Pendleton, the Chief of Artillery of the Confederacy’s Army Northern Virginia, during the American Civil War.
