Biography

Born Mary Crutchfield in 1877, Mary Rose (b. 1877, d. 1942) was the owner and propreitor of the Rose Inn, a prominent Black tourist tavern advertised in the Negro Motorist Green Book from 1939 to 1966. Mary married John Rose, a janitor at the postal office and owner of two properities in Lexington. When he passed away in 1938, he deeded 351 North Main Street to Mary Rose. She participated in the Virginia Federation of Colored Women's Clubs, and brought the club together at the First Baptist church in Lexington. Other attendees included Eliza Walker and Janie Porter Barrett.
