Biography

John Reynolds Winston served as part of the 45th North Carolina Infantry during the American Civil War. He was captured at Gettysburg and sent to Johnson's Island Prison Camp. While Lake Erie was frozen he escaped on foot into Canada. From Canada he went to Nassau and back to North Carolina where he rejoined his regiment. He was paroled at Appamatox when the American Civil War ended.
