Scope and Contents

From the Collection:

These volumes contain numerous credit references for area businesses, lobbying for a bill in Congress related to descendants of George Washington, collection letters on behalf of landlords and other businesses, letters detailing local steel mills, a variety of letters on his purchase of Rockbridge Alum Springs, and some letters on the establishment of a local militia. Furthermore, the volumes contain letters about ongoings in Irish creek, Greenlee Letcher's excitement over presidential hopeful William Jennings Bryan, and some correspondence related to local African American churches and their trouble related to a lack of land deeds. This collection also includes emails from Doug Harwood with other details on the contents of the letter books.

Scope and Contents From the Collection:

Greenlee Davidson Letcher was the son of wartime Virginia govenor John Letcher, and was named after an artillery captain who died in service to the confederate army.
