Conrad M. Speece letter

This collection contains a letter from Professor Conrad M. Speece to Polly Hanna, daughter of prominent Lexington citizen Matthew Hanna, dated 1791 and a transcription of an article in the Rockbridge County News in which the letter was printed. The letter addresses gender roles of the 1700s, specifically the perceived innate characteristics of women and their ability and desire to learn.

Construction Proposal and Engineer's Report for the North River Navigation Company

This collection consists of a single 8 x 6 photograph of eleven Confederate veterans standing in front of a home in Romney, West Va. The veterans are identified, and included is the inscription from the reverse of the original photograph. It says, 'Entertained at the home of John J. Cornwell and wife in honor of J. D. Parsons and his ex-confederate comrades, March 1915.'

Contracts for hire of enslaved persons by the William Ackerly estate

People in the image include John Alexander Runkle and his wife Annie Ardelia Arehart Runkle with daughters Maggie, Katherine. Sons David and Stuart could also be in the image.

One of Mary's diaries covers their first married year (1924-25) in Cuba and others cover their trips (1935-1959) out west in Canada and to Central America and Europe.
