Paxton between 1845 and 1863. Scope and Contents This collection is primarily general family correspondence including Civil War letters (dated 1862-1864) from John P. Welsh, a Confederate infantry officer, and James L. Welsh. There are also 34 family letters on microfilm, 12 of which were written by John P. Welsh during his confinement in a Federal prison.

Scope and Contents This collection includes manuscript and typecript sketches of 41 Washington and Lee Alumni who served in the American Civil War. The materials were compiled for a proposed memorial volume which was never completed. Included are letters to McDowell from veterans, descendants of veterans, and associates answering his request for information.
