Carl David Swanson Scrapbook

This scrapbook was made by Swanson, the 1956 W&L Mock Convention chairman, featuring photographs and news items regarding the death of Alben W. Barkley while giving the event's keynote address. It includes letters from various senators (including Willis Robertson, Richard B. Russell, and Herman Talmadge) concerning Mock Convention and contains photographs of Sharon Ritchie, Miss America 1956, who attended the convention.

This collection includes letters to and from John L. Campbell, Dean at Washington and Lee University, as well as letters to, from, and concerning Frank J. Gilliam, who was a member of the Washington and Lee class of 1917, 1912-1926. Campbell and Gilliam correspond about several members of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity being unable to return for the next semester due to grades. This collection contains correspondence concerning Chamberlain's work on several Washington and Lee University committees from 1904-1908, including committee work on a chapter house for Phi Kappa Psi and on the new Carnegie library. It also includes his two notebooks from law courses (1875-1876) taught by John Randolph Tucker. Lastly, there is an 1874 photograph of Chamberlain and two fraternity brothers, G. M.
