Biography
This unit first mustered into service in 1861 as the First Virginia Cavalry (United States) and became attached to the United States Army. Recruits were from a region of northwestern Virginia which would become West Virginia when the state was created in 1863. At that point the regiment changed its name to the First West Virginia Cavalry.
