This folder contains two letters from the American Civil War era, written by the Shields family.

The series contains primary and secondary resources on the Rockwell brothers, Paul Ayres and Kiffin Yates, and World War I aviation history utilized by author and historian Dale L. Walker in his research. Walker has written, among others, Only the Clouds Remain: Ted Parsons of the Lafayette Escadrille, Amsterdam, NY: Alandale Press, 1980.

This collection includes correspondence while Jamison was Secretary of War of South Carolina, 1861; scattered letters and papers pertaining to the South Carolina Secession Convention of which he was president, and papers related to his tenure as presiding judge of the military court of Gen. Beauregard's Corps, 1862-1864. Robert Woodward Barnwell and Lawrence Massillon Keitt are among the correspondents.

The papers of Captain David L. Hopkins, include 12 letters to his wife, Lou, all but one from his post in Lynchburg, Virginia, concerning their Lexington, Virginia farm, food supplies, mutual acquaintances, and occasionally the war, in particular the Battle of Lynchburg as well as several other family letters and Confederate money.

This letter by Dr. Wesley Emmett Gatewood is addressed to Robert E. Lee. Gatewood would like information on attending Washington College and a piece of clothing Lee wore during the American Civil War.

This collection consists of three letters written by E. M. Walden from various Confederate States of America camps (near Wilmington, NC; Kinston, NC; and Richmond, VA) to his sister. He provides her with updates on CSA military activities and mentions General Sherman's raid in Georgia. The letters are dated June 13, 1863, Dec. 3, 1864, and Jan. 20, 1865.

This collection contains letters and receipts of Colonel James Kerr Edmondson, a Lexington, Virginia lawyer, judge and mayor, and of his wife, Emily Jane Taylor Edmondson. Also included are Edmondson's letters to his wife during the Civil War, while he was an officer in the Stonewall Brigade. Their are some items from their relations, the Monroes and Penicks of Lexington.

This collection includes family correspondence (1827-1846), letters (1862-1864) written by Harkness while serving in the Civil War, commissions and court martial documents, and muster rolls (1863-1865).

This letter is from Elizabeth S. Myrick writing as "Mrs. S. P. Myrick". Elizabeth wishes to send her son, James to Washington College and asks for a circular and admission requirements. She explains that her son left school at fifteen to serve in the Civil War and fears his age and limited schooling before the war may hinder his opportunity to attend the school.

This letter to Robert E. Lee comes from Ellen Reily. She asks Lee if he could include her husband in his book on the American Civil War. She includes newspaper clippings, orders, and letters by and about her husband Colonel James Reily.

This letter was written by American educator Emma Willard on March 15, 1866 to Robert E. Lee. Willard introduces herself and explains that she is a writer of history and has followed Lee's career through the war. She expresses her wish to establish contact with various generals, including Lee, to record their views of experiences for an upcoming school history book on the topic.

An engraving of General Wade Hampton. Wade Hampton, III (1818-1902) was a South Carolina plantation owner and politician who served as a Confederate general during the Civil War.

An address, delivered on the occasion of the presentation of a portrait of Dr. Powell to Dinwiddie County, Va., by his grandson, Dr.Richard Powell Carter, class of 1959.

This collection includes 54 miscellaneous letters, 1821-1866; diaries and financial records McFarland kept while he was a missionary and during his two pastorates, 1823-1836, and 1841-1871, at Bethel Presbyterian Church, Augusta County, Va.; lecture notes taken while a student at Princeton University; and printed biographical sketches and engravings of McFarland.Correspondents include Stonewall Jackson, George Junkin, William Spottswood.
